Ensure your travel is insured

Traveling is rejuvenating. It is a series of wonderful experiences and new sights that takes way the stress and anxiety of your daily routine. But, what if………… the airline loses your baggage, you fall and break a leg, you eat out and get a bad case of food poisoning, you swerve your rental car to avoid hitting a child and crash into a tree?

These are all possibilities that can happen at home or even when you are travelling.

No one likes to think about such uncertainties when planning a trip but it is important to consider them to ensure that you are not stranded in a strange place with no source of help.

One of the best preventive measures against such uncertainties is ‘Insurance’. If you are thinking, ‘I already have insurance’ or ‘why should I pay money to secure myself against an incident that may not even occur?’ The reasoning is the same as taking out a regular insurance policy ‘to ensure in an emergency that the lack of funds doesn’t become the reason behind lack of treatment.’

If you already have an insurance policy, you need to be aware that most insurance policies do not cover many of the problems that occur while travelling. So, double check your insurance policy to make sure that it covers any problem that may occur during your trip before you leave. You do not want to find out the limitations of your insurance policy during an emergency.

What is Travel Insurance?
Travel Insurance is insurance intended to cover medical expenses, financial and other losses incurred while traveling, either within one's own country, or internationally. When you are booking your trip, you can arrange for a travel insurance policy that covers the duration of your trip or you can purchase a more extensive, continuous insurance from travel insurance companies or travel agents.

There are multiple travel insurance policies available in the market. These insurance policies offer coverage for adventure travel, cruise travel, student travel, business travel, leisure travel and international travel. And, most importantly, it protects you and your family if any unfortunate incident does occur.

The most common risks that are covered by travel insurance are:
  • Cancellation
  • Delays
  • Medical expenses
  • Accidental death, injury or disablement
  • Loss, theft or damage to personal possessions
  • Rental car damage

Some travel policies will also provide cover for additional costs.

There are 4 basic types of Travel Insurance policies, you can choose a policy that is most suitable to your needs:

Trip Cancellation Insurance:
Trip Cancellation Insurance offers you trip cost reimbursement benefits that help ensure you are prepared in the event of an accident, sickness or loss, trip interruptions, etc when traveling. It also provides coverage if you have to cancel the trip due to a death in the family or any other calamity listed in the policy.

Baggage Insurance:
A lot of us have faced problems due to loss of baggage and personal belongings. If you are traveling with expensive electronic equipment or jewelry, it is essential to get your belongings insured. Baggage Insurance provides coverage in case your personal belongings are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip.

Travel Medical Insurance:
Just imagine being sick with insufficient money in an unknown country. Doctor’s bills and other emergency procedures can be very expensive. Medical travel insurance covers health related items that occur during the term of the policy and not already existing ailments.

Accidental Death Insurance:
Accidental Death Insurance provides coverage for your family if you die on a trip. It pays your family a lump sum in case of an accidental death while travelling.

Travel insurance is like a guardian angel that covers when you are travelling abroad or domestically. Therefore, next time you leave for vacation, make sure you have adequate travel insurance!
